Eligibility Requirements
Below are the requirements that determine a student's
eligibility to participate in JSC athletics.
Satisfactory Progress
1 YR (2 semesters) 24 credits
2 YR (4 semesters) 50 credits
3 YR (6 semesters) 76 credits
4 YR (8 semesters) 102 credits
In determining whether or not a transfer student meets the satisfactory academic progress standards, previous periods of enrollment will be equaled to full time enrollment based on the number of transfer credits that are transferred to the student’s current degree program. Each 16 credits transferred will equal one semester of enrollment. For returning students a semester for Satisfactory Progress is any semester at JSC (or another VSC school/combination of both) where a student-athlete was enrolled on opening day for at least 12 credits.
Academic Standing
A student-athlete must be in Good Academic Standing per the current JSC catalog. Academic standing is based on a student’s GPA, which is determined exclusively on the basis of grades achieved in courses taken at Johnson State College prior to Summer 2002 or at any of the Vermont State Colleges during and following Summer 2002 and on grades received in courses taken under a consortium or contractual agreement that are recorded on the student’s Johnson transcript. Transfer courses or courses taken on a Pass/No Pass basis do not figure in this calculation. Academic Standing is determined at the end of each semester by the Registrar and the Academic Deans’ Office. Minimum GPA required depends on the number of cumulative “GPA credits” earned and are as follows:
Fewer that 30 credits: 1.75
30 credits and above: 2.00
(In looking at a student’s transcript, GPA is determined by dividing the cumulative “Quality Points” by the cumulative “GPA credits.”)
Full-time Enrollment
A student-athlete must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 institutional credits at the time of participation. The only exception would be a student who plans to graduate at the end of the semester in question, taking less than 12 credits, but taking only those courses needed to complete their degree.
4 Seasons/10 Semester Rule
A student-athlete may participate in four seasons in one sport in 10 semesters. Athletic eligibility is terminated at the end of the 10 semesters in which the student was regularly enrolled. Semesters, or college terms attended include all semesters with 12 or more credits attempted, including the current term, and for transfers those semesters at other colleges with 12 or more credits attempted. (A semester/term attended is counted if the student is enrolled for 12 credits or more on the opening day of the semester. If the student drops below 12 credits after opening day, with or without penalty, the semester is still counted as full-time.)
A season of intercollegiate participation shall be counted when a student-athlete participates (practices or competes) during or after the first contest following the student’s initial participation at an institution.
Final Semester Participation
A student-athlete may compete while enrolled in less than a minimum full-time program of studies, provided the student is enrolled in the final semester or quarter of the baccalaureate or graduate program and the institution certifies that the student is carrying (for credit) the courses necessary to complete degree requirements. The student-athlete granted eligibility under this provision shall be eligible for any NCAA championship that begins within 60 days following said semester or quarter, provided the student has not exhausted the 10 semesters/15 quarters for completion of the individual’s four seasons of eligibility.
Graduate Student/Post Baccalaureate Participation
A student-athlete who is enrolled in a graduate or professional school of the institution he or she most recently attended as an undergraduate, a student-athlete who is enrolled and seeking a second baccalaureate or equivalent degree at the same institution, or a student-athlete who has graduated and is continuing as a full-time student at the same institution while taking course work that would lead to the equivalent of another major or degree as defined and documented by the institution, may participate in intercollegiate athletics, provided the student has eligibility remaining and such participation occurs within the applicable 10-semester period.
