KATHARINE HARTSHORN '34 writes:"I haven't done anything outstanding. I do collect and give interviews on the history of the town of Warren as the Town Historian. Since I have been here 91 years I know more than most anyone living here at present. I also give programs about the 'world of buttons.' I am an avid collector of all kinds 'old and modern.'"

Passings

JOYCE ATCHINSON, '31, died January 12, 2004, after a prolonged illness. Mrs. Atchinson was born in North Hyde Park on September 19, 1910, the youngest of 13 children. She graduated from Johnson Normal School and began her teaching career in Pottersville and Hardwick, traveling by horseback to the one-room schoolhouses. She moved to Newport in 1943 to teach first grade in the Newport City schools, retiring in the mid-1970s.  She will be remembered by her students for her high standards, fairness, and love of learning. Her husband, Wayne, predeceased her in 2002. Mrs. Murch is survived by her sons, her grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

JANE "JENNIE" WETMORE, '32, passed away on August 28, 2005 at the age of 93. Jennie worked as a school teacher in the Whately Elementary School, in Massachusetts.  She married Henry A. Wetmore and moved to Ohio, where she retired as a clerk from Halle Bros Co. in Cleveland. Jennie moved to Bowie, Ohio in 1985 with her daughter, son-in-law, and family. Her favorite pastime was creating and cultivating gardens. She is survived by her four children, brother, grandchildren and great grandchildren 

CLEONE MURCH, '33, died January 12, 2004, in Windsor. She was born November 4, 1911, in East Fairfeld, and graduated from Johnson Normal School in 1933 with a teaching degree. Mrs. Murch taught in one room schools in Fairfield, and later owned and operated Cleone's Yarn Shop out of her home for 15 years. She enjoyed playing bridge, bowling and traveling. Her husband died in 1977, but she is survived by two sons, a daughter, 8 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren; a niece and several nephews.

ALLEEN (DODDS) EURICH, '35, passed away on September 29, 2005 at The Central Vermont Medical Center. She was born on August 14, 1915, and married Edward Eurich on June, 19, 1939.  Alleen was an educator in Cabot, East Warren and Moretown. She is survived by her husband, Edward, of 66 years. The couple were lifelong members of the couples club in Waitsfield; Alleen was also a member of the Morning Star Chapter, OES. She enjoyed rug braiding, fishing, gardening and family gatherings at home. Alleen leaves behind a large family, including her children Gordon, Janet, Sally, Gregory, Beecher (Beth) and their partners as well as 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

MARJORIE (MARNE) ERWIN MANCHESTER, '35 passed away on February 17, 2006. Marjorie married her late husband Henry Manchester on March 30, 1935 and had seven children. She taught at the Waterville Locke School, and she founded and operated Manchester Lumber with her husband. Marjorie was very active in the Waterville Church of the Nazarene, the Waterville Community Club and participated in dramas in the 1950s. She was an avid reader and meticulous housekeeper, she was currently on the Mountain View Cemetery Executive Board. Along with Henry, Marjorie was predeseased by her daughter Carolyn. She is survived by six children and thier spouses, 24 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, sisters, her brother, nieces and nephews.

GWENDOLYN E. MANN, '35,  passed away Thursday, April 27, 2006, at Vermont Respite House in Williston. A longtime educator in Vermont and Massachusetts, she was born February 11, 1915, a twin daughter of the late Merritt H. and Cornelia Lois (Stebbins) Mann. Gwen graduated from Cambridge High School, Class of 1932, and attended Johnson Normal School and Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Mass. She began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Belvidere and later moved to Wollaston, Mass., where she taught kindergarten in the Hingham school system for many years. After completing graduate work at Boston University, Gwen joined the faculty at Eastern Nazarene College, assuming a position of leadership in the education department. There she taught, mentored and encouraged many students as they pursued careers in education around New England and the world. Gwen was widely known and respected in the field of education throughout the South Shore and was active in church, college and faculty activities. Gwen received many honors, including a 1991 Alumna of the Year award from ENC, which stated "Gifted teacher, a tower of strength to her family, her students still say 'Miss Mann taught me,' trusted Christian friend, she speaks not to a class but to a world". Upon retirement, she returned to Vermont where she remained active in her church and community. She leaves her twin sister, Genevieve C. Mann; a sister, Marguerite H. Nielson; her brother, Dr. Roger W. Mann; and sister-in-law Muriel S. Mann, all of Waterville; a sister-in-law, Katherine A. Mann of Wollaston; and many nieces and nephews, each of whom was very dear to her and all of whom were devoted to her as well. She is also survived by several cousins and numerous friends.

TERESA MCDONOUGH BERTHIAUME, '37, of 121 Forest Ave., St. Johnsbury, Vt., died peacefully on May 3, 2006.   Teresa was born in Highgate on July 20, 1914, to Elizabeth Mackin McDonough and Patrick Joseph McDonough. She attended St. Ann's Academy, graduating as valedictorian in the Class of 1931.Teresa then pursued her undergraduate studies at Johnson State College, graduating with a major in elementary education. She continued her graduate studies at the University of Vermont. She married Gerard M. Berthiaume on July 3, 1944. They had one daughter, Bernadette Berthiaume, who was born June 12, 1945. Teresa's 40-year teaching career began in a one-room school in Highgate. She provided instruction to Grades 1-8 in all curriculum areas, cleaned the building, maintained the wood fire and brought in the water. Her teaching career then continued in Swanton, where she taught Grades 1-4. At the time of her retirement in 1975, she was teaching Grade 1. Teresa also served as director of Headstart in Swanton.  Teresa was fiercely proud of her Irish heritage. St. Patrick's Day was celebrated annually in her home. She was highly devoted to her family and her church. She was a member of the Church of the Nativity in Swanton until she moved to St. Johnsbury in 1988 and joined St. John Evangelist Parish. Teresa loved any opportunity to relate to children. She was a highly devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  Having grown up on a farm, Teresa always loved animals and house pets.  Teresa lived independently until April 4, 2006, when she moved to 271 Hillside Ave., St. Johnsbury, where she was lovingly cared for by Dan and Deborah Baldwin. One of Teresa's greatest joys during the last month of her life was that she had the pleasure of enjoying the devotion of the Baldwins' golden lab, Abbey.  Teresa was predeceased by her father, Patrick, in 1954; her mother, Elizabeth, in 1972; her brother, James, in 1976; and her husband, Gerard, in 1988.She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Bernadette and Paul Chouinard, of Danville.

RUTH NEWTOWN HALE, '37, died June 27, 2005, in Long Beach, California.
