EDP Outstanding Alumni Awards

2006 Recipients

Joseph Allen, Class of 1998

Joseph Allen is founder, President, and CEO of Power Shift Online Services, a full-service Internet Service Provider.  His company provides unlimited Internet access accounts throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Power Shift Online began in 1992 as a small computer services company in Montreal, Canada. Joe teamed up with an old friend and formed Power Shift Computer Services, providing mostly business customers in the U.S. and Canada with PC sales and service. The following year, the company offered Internet access and a full range of related services. In 1995, he sold the computer side of the business to his partner and moved to Stowe, Vermont, to direct the internet side of the business.

He says, "Our personal service shines in our Web site hosting and advanced email services, which allows Power Shift to host Web sites for corporations in Mexico, Canada, as well as the U.S. And we have not forgotten our roots in serving over 7,000 dial-up customers with v.92 digital phone lines."

Joe was presented with the Lamoille Valley Chamber of Commerce Community Business Leader of the Year Award in 2004, and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Lamoille Economic Development Corporation.

Katherine Blackett, Class of 1995

Katherine Blackett received her law degree from the University of New Mexico in 1998. After beginning her law career in a big law firm specializing in insurance defense, she moved on to a more personalized practice, and now has her own practice specializing in Estate Planning, Estate Administration and Elder Law. She works with clients on issues involving planning for asset management during incapacity, asset transfer at death, guardianship and conservatorship, health insurance, long-term care, and protecting assets for one spouse when the other must move to long-term care.

Kathy conducts public service programs for women and the elderly, on these legal topics. In the past year, she has made regular presentations for the public at the Women's Resource Center at the Mountain View Regional Medical Center on "What is Probate," given in conjunction with a local probate judge, and "What You Need to Know about Decisions at the End of Life," in conjunction with a hospice social worker.

Kathy lives in Las Cruces, New Mexico and is enjoying her life in the sunny southwest. She has the highest praises for the EDP program, which she entered as a single mother, with hopes of advancing her education and career — goals that have been fulfilled. Kathy says, "I would not be where I am today without having had the opportunity to earn my undergraduate degree through the EDP program. Thank you!"
