SUSAN COLLINS, '70
Susan Collins, Class of 1970, recognizes her education at Johnson State College as the reason for her success in the field of education. She went on to receive her M. Ed. from UVM, and Reading Recovery certification from Lesley College. Her proudest accomplishment was helping to start the first kindergarten in Eden and serving as its first teacher. Susan served as a classroom teacher at three Vermont schools before becoming a K-6 Title I Reading Coordinator in New Hampshire, later serving as one of the first Reading Recovery Teachers trained in the Northwest (VT) Consortium. Susan retired after 32 years in education, with her final time spent as School Librarian at Swanton Central School. She is proud to be from a family of educators, with her mother, maternal grandmother and grandfather each devoting 30-plus years to education, and also has a daughter and son-in-law who are educators. Susan remains active in the JSC Alumni Council, is a member and past president of Zeta Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma educational sorority, past president of Vermont Council on Reading, and a presenter at the International Reading Association, New England Reading Association, and Vermont Council on Reading Conferences. She has won awards from the VT Council on Reading; Johnson State College; and the University of Vermont. In her spare time, Susan is a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Grand Matron in 2000-2001, and is a deacon at her church. She enjoys spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and knits mittens to give to church, community and school groups each year.
