Distinguished Alumni Award
2010 Recipient: Tom Howard
The Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award is presented annually to honor contributions of JSC Alumni to our society, through outstanding career and public service achievements.
Tom Howard, Class of 1970, is the recipient of this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award. Tom, who is recently retired, was the executive director of the Washington County Youth Services Bureau/Boys & Girls Club since 1978. Under Tom’s leadership the organization has grown from a staff of five with a $100,000 budget to 35 full-time employees, 15 part-time, and AmeriCorps/VISTA volunteers with a budget of nearly $5 million.
Under his watchful eye, he affiliated the agency with the Boys & Girls Club to expand services to young people in Central Vermont and established a number of cutting-edge programs including the Return House — a 10-bed transitional program for 18- to 22-year-old men leaving jail; the only program of its type in Vermont and a model for the nation. The Bureau’s substance abuse prevention programs have earned national recognition, and Tom has been recognized by the state of Vermont for his exemplary service to young people. Tom’s wife Suzanne is also a JSC grad (Class of 1971.)
