Information Technology Services:
Info for New Students
JSC offers top-end Mac and PC computers, with printers and the latest software, in labs and classrooms throughout campus. Click here for locations and hours.
ITS is more than just computers and labs, however. Here are some of the ways we support the JSC community:
MyJSC: The MyJSC Portal (sometimes called "MyJSC," sometimes called "the portal") is your online campus connection to Moodle course content, JSC email, JSC campus and VSC announcements, library resources, VSC Web Services, and more.
VSC WEB SERVICES: This is the Vermont State College information system for students, faculty and staff. From this site, students can access billing statements, grades, class schedules, financial information and more; while faculty can class rosters, advisee lists, grading, etc.
JSC EMAIL:
- Check your email often! JSC email is the primary means of relaying official information at the college, so it's essential that you check your email often. Email quotas are set at 1 gigabyte; please be advised your account will be disabled if your quota is exceeded. You will receive a warning daily when your quota reaches 800 megabytes.
- Your email address is: firstname.lastname@jsc.edu
- Be sure to verify your email address before giving it to others!
- To verify your email address, log on to your email account using Outlook Web Access. Hold your mouse over your “Inbox” or over the display name at the top of the folder list. Either method will display your email address in the status bar, located on the bottom left side of the window. (Note that the status bar option must be turned on. In Internet Explorer 7, click on “Toolbars" from the “Tools” option, then click the “Status Bar” option.
- To access your JSC email after logging on to the MyJSC portal, click on the "My Email tab" in the top left of the screen to open up the Web-based Outlook email program.
JSC NETWORK SERVICES: All students have 1 gigabyte of network storage space on their P (personal) drive. Your P drive will be backed up every night. Remember that your account will be disabled if you exceed your quota. You will receive one warning when your quota reaches 900 megabytes.
ART DRIVE: Students enrolled in digital imaging classes receive network storage for their coursework for the duration of the class. Files are be deleted when the class has ended, so be sure to copy any files you wish to retain and save them on a personal storage device.
Your user name and password will give you online access to the MyJSC portal, Moodle online courses, VSC Web Services, JSC email and network resources, and JSC desktop computers.
Connecting your Computer to the Internet on Campus
- An Ethernet patch cable is required in order to connect your computer to the network jack in a residence hall. Cables are located in the RA office of your building.
- Instructions to connect Windows XP, Windows VISTA, and Mac computers to the JSC network are provided with the Ethernet patch cables.
- You will need your JSC user name and password to connect to the network. If you did not activate your account before arriving on campus, stop by the Academic Computing Center at LLC 227 (Room 227 of the Library and Learning Center). A student lab assistant will be able to help you.
- All other Internet devices — gaming devices, iPods, etc. — can be manually registered by the IT department on request. Log in to the MyJSC portal and clicking on the Help Desk link (orange question mark at top right). Please use the guest login option and include the following information in the work order request: your full name; your JSC user name; your residence hall and room number; and your phone number. A member of the IT department will respond within 2 business days.
- Dumb hubs are permitted. Please be aware that when you register your computer or other Internet device with the network for the first time, you will need to plug the device directly into the network drop.
- Please remember that attaching personal network devices, such as wireless access points, or routers, into any campus network jack is NOT permitted.
