Graduate Admissions

Johnson State College offers three graduate degree programs:

  • M.A. in counseling
  • M.A. in education (and a certificate of advanced graduate studies in education)
  • M.F.A. in studio arts

Graduate students have many reasons for choosing to attend JSC. Here are a few of the most common.

Class

Faculty Who Have Been There

Professors in all three programs bring instructive real-life experience to the classroom. Education faculty taught in schools before earning their master's and doctorate degrees. Many counseling professors have had and still maintain a private practice. The studio arts professors continue to produce new works and receive fellowships.

Passionate and Accessible Faculty

JSC graduate students are often struck by the energy our professors apply to their work. Whether it's a dynamic classroom presentation, the time they devote to advising students, or the effort they put into monitoring each student's performance, our professors have a well-earned reputation for giving it their all.

Meeting the Needs of Adult Learners

Education courses meet only once a week (later in the day) during fall and spring semesters, and are offered as week-long intensive courses in the summer. Most counseling courses take place in the late afternoon; others are available on weekends and in the summer. Meanwhile, the studio arts program is designed specifically for practicing artists. The low residency requirements allow students to work independently in home studios and on their own time while periodically submitting work to faculty for critiquing.

An Intimate Learning Environment

All three graduate programs feature small class sizes that promote close student-faculty relationships. Students receive personalized attention and can develop their degree plan to best fit their interests and career path.

Putting Theory to Practice

At JSC, we stress the importance of gaining new experiences in real-life environments. Our education students get out into the schools to teach. Our counseling students complete internships at sites conducive to their career goals. For their required thesis exhibition, studio arts students do everything from creating a six-month body of work to hanging the work and handling publicity.
