Applying for Graduate Studies

Admission to all graduate programs requires the completion of the Application for Graduate Admission form, as well as other related documentation.

Or you can obtain a copy of the form to complete and mail in by:

  • Calling 800-635-2356 or 802-635-1219;
  • E-mailing the Office of Admissions;
  • Downloading a pdf version of the admissions form for the program you are applying to (see below);

GRADUATE PROGRAM IN EDUCATION or COUNSELING (M.A.)

Information for U.S. Applicants

To apply for the Graduate Program in Education, please submit:

  • A completed Application for Graduate Admission and a $40 application fee
  • An official copy of all college and university transcripts
  • Three recommendations from professors or other professionals who know the quality of your preparation or who can attest to your character and skills. These materials become part of your permanent file at Johnson State College.
  • A two-page essay stating why you are interested in graduate study (Counseling applicants should refer to specific questions on the application form in answering this question.)


Applicants must also complete an interview with the graduate faculty. Once the above information is received, you will be contacted about an interview.

Information for International Applicants

To apply for the M.A. in Education or Counseling, international applicants should submit:

  • A completed International Application for Graduate Admission and a $40 application fee
  • If English is not your native language, your Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score report (visit www.ets.org for more information)
  • Financial documentation for immigration purposes equal to one year's expenses (See the Financial Documentation form)
  • An official copy of all college and university transcripts
  • Three recommendations from professors or other professionals who know the quality of your preparation or who can attest to your character and skills. These materials become part of your permanent file at Johnson State College.
  • A two-page essay stating why you are interested in graduate study (Counseling applicants should refer to specific questions on the application form in answering this question.)

Interviewing (All M.A.Applicants)

Applicants must also complete an interview with the graduate faculty. Once the above information is received, you will be contacted about an interview.

GRADUATE PROGRAM IN FINE ARTS (M.F.A)

Information for U.S. Applicants

To apply for the M.F.A. in Fine Arts program, please submit:

  • The Application for Graduate Admission for the MFA Program including a $40 application fee
  • An official copy of all college and university transcripts
  • Three recommendations from professors or other professionals who know the quality of your work and your strengths and weaknesses. These materials become part of your permanent file at Johnson State College.
  • An artist’s statement discussing the technical development of your work and your conceptual considerations
  • A portfolio of recent work consisting of either (a) 20 slides in a plastic slide sheet, labeled with the following: name, title, date, media and "top"; or (b) a CD or DVD of 20 high-resolution images in JPEG format. Provide information about each work as noted on page 4 of the application.
  • A self-addressed stamped envelope for the return of your images
  • A current resume

Information for International Applicants

To apply for the M.F.A. in Fine Arts program, please submit:
