2010-2011 JSC Financial Aid Terms and Conditions
The funds indicated may be available to assist you based on your financial need in meeting your educational expenses during the period indicated. Please refer to Understanding Your Award for details. The following is a short description of aid programs. Please note if an aid type is not listed on your award letter you are not eligible based on your FAFSA information. Grants and scholarships do not need to be repaid whereas, loans are repayable. For funding options please also refer to Understanding Your Award.
- Pell Grant - The Pell Grant is a need-based grant awarded to eligible matriculated undergraduate students based on the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) calculated using the information you provided on the FAFSA. Pell Grant amounts for 2010-2011 range from $555-$5,550.
- SEOG (Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant) - SEOG is awarded to students based on need and availability of funding, priority goes to Pell-eligible students. SEOG amounts generally range from $500 - $2,500.
- ACG (Academic Competitiveness Grant) - ACG is a federally funded grant awarded to first and second year Pell eligible students. First year eligibility is based on high school graduation date and high school course load. Second year eligibility requires a 3.0 GPA and successful completion of 30 credit hours. The first year ACG amount is $750 for the academic year and the second year ACG amount is $1300 for the academic year. (Please note per Federal Regulations the ACG program ends after 2010-2011 so second-year grants will not be awarded next year).
- SMART (Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant) - The SMART Grant is awarded to third and fourth year Pell eligible students enrolled in eligible majors. Recipients must have a 3.0 GPA (GPA is checked each semester); successful completion of 60 credit hours for a third year SMART Grant, and successful completion of 90 credits for a fourth year SMART Grant. The award amount is $4,000 for the academic year. (Please note per Federal Regulations the SMART program ends after 2010-2011 so second year grants will not be awarded next year).
- JSC Grant - Institutional funds available to undergraduate students with exceptional need and availability of funding, priority goes to students who apply by JSC’s priority deadlines. JSC Grant amounts generally range from $400 - $2500.
- VSAC Grant - This grant will appear as an estimate unless VSAC has notified us of your grant amount. This is a state-funded grant available to instate students based on need. It is determined by the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation (VSAC). You must apply directly to VSAC for this grant at www.vsac.org.
- Direct Loans - Direct Student Loans are offered as subsidized or unsubsidized. The Direct Subsidized Loan is a long-term, low-interest loan (4.5%); the Federal government pays the interest while a student is enrolled at least half time (6 credits). The Direct Unsubsidized Loan is a long term, low interest loan (6.8%); the Federal government does not pay the interest while the student is enrolled. The unsubsidized loan is available to students who do not qualify for part of or the entire subsidized loan. (See JSC’s web set for loan level information)
- Perkins Loan - Federal low interest loan (5%) with no interest accrual while the student is enrolled at least half- time. It is awarded based on need and fund availability, with priority given to Pell eligible students. Award amounts generally range from $500-$1500.
- Federal Work-Study - Work-Study funds are earned through on campus employment. Earnings cannot exceed the amount awarded per semester. Earnings are not applied towards your bill, but are for your personal use. It is up to the student to apply for and obtain employment. See 2010-2011 Understanding Your Award for more details. Work-Study awards are generally $1,500 for the academic year.
Eligibility for the programs listed is based on data we received at the time of awarding unless otherwise indicated. You may have submitted corrections to the federal processor that we have not received and therefore have not been considered. Revised eligibility notices are sent only by email when necessary. It is important to check your email regularly!
You may expect a change in your eligibility if:
- There is a change in your enrollment status from what you indicated on your FAFSA.
- You receive additional scholarships, grants, or other funds not listed (Including State Grants, Vocational Rehabilitation Sponsorship, Employer Assisted Tuition, Military Tuition Assistance, scholarships from local organizations such as Lions Club, Rotary, etc., or private loans).
- Corrections caused by discrepancy between information on your application and data reported on verification documents, tax forms, or any other forms requested by this
- office. This may occur with data for the current year and/or with data on file for any year.
- There is a change to your academic standing and/or program.
- Any of the costs used to determine your eligibility change.
- The college receives insufficient funds to meet all awards offered.
- Satisfactory Academic Progress
You must be making Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) in accordance with the college’s policy. See Satisfactory Academic Progress for more details. Satisfactory Academic Progress is typically reviewed once a year at the end of the spring semester.
