How to Apply for Financial Aid

Johnson State College Priority Filing Dates for Financial Aid

March 1: New students

May 1: Returning Students

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

If you have not previously applied for financial aid, you may choose any of the following three methods to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You may file any time after January 1, 2010 for the 2010-2011 academic year.

  • Apply online at  www.fafsa.ed.gov. (Recommended, as it will reduce the time it takes for your application to be processed.)
  • Download and complete a pdf file of the FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov (This must be mailed for processing)
  • Request a paper version of the FAFSA by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-899-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3242). Paper FAFSAs are no longer available in financial aid offices or high school guidance offices.

If you elect to file through FAFSA on the Web, you will have two options for signing your online FAFSA. If you have a Personal Identification Number (PIN), you can electronically sign your FAFSA. Parents with PINs can also electronically sign (if you don’t have a PIN, you can apply for one now by going to www.pin.ed.gov). You may also sign your FAFSA by printing a paper signature page from FAFSA on the Web, signing it, and mailing it to the provided address.

If you applied for financial aid during the 2009-2010 year, simply update your Renewal FAFSA with your 2009 financial information and make other necessary changes on the Web using your PIN.

When filing the FAFSA, please make sure to list Johnson State College using our Title IV code  #003688. After your application has been processed, your information will be forwarded to the JSC Financial Aid Office by the Federal Processor.

Although it is preferable to use a completed 2009 federal income tax return to complete the 2010-2011 FAFSA, you may use reasonable estimates of your 2009 income if your tax return filing date will affect meeting our priority deadlines.

Helpful Hints

Apply Early: File the FAFSA as soon after January 1 of the award year as possible.

Be Accurate: Read all instructions carefully before you begin. Make sure you use your correct social security number on all application materials and be sure all required signatures appear on all applications and forms!

Keep Copies: It is your responsibility to photocopy the forms, correspondence, and other information you submit to the Financial Aid Office. We recommend that you record the dates you submit information and the name of any person with whom you speak.

Reply promptly: You may receive a request for additional information — even if you have already received an award letter, do not ignore our request in providing this information, as it will delay your aid being disbursed to your bill! If you are unsure if all required forms are on file, contact the Financial Aid Office or check on Web Services.

Important notice for Vermont Residents: Vermont residents must complete a separate Vermont Student Assistance Grant (VSAC) application to be considered for a VSAC grant. Many Vermont students lose out on grant money by not completing their application. Apply online at www.vsac.org. Please note that the JSC Financial Aid Office and VSAC may make similar requests for information in order to complete your file, but it is your responsibility to supply this information to both places.

Reapply every year: Your financial aid is not renewed automatically. You must submit all required forms every year.

  • By submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) you are applying for the following financial aid programs based on your financial need as determined by the Federal Processor:

- Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)

- Federal Perkins Loan

- Federal Direct Subsidized Student Loans

- Federal Direct Unsubsidized Student Loans

- Federal Work-Study

- Federal Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)

- Federal National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART)

- JSC Institutional Grants
- Some State Grants
- Some JSC Scholarships

You may apply for a Federal Pell Grant and student loans throughout the year.

You will be notified of your eligibility for any of the programs listed above on your award letter. If you have questions about your award letter, e-mail the Financial Aid Office or call us at 802-635-1380.
