PoJazzers believe that jazz, especially the blues, tells stories and that poetry, at its lyrical best, is never far from music and dance. In each performance, poets read from their own written work while musicians interweave riffs that erupt from both the rhythms of a poetic line and the musical phrase.
In the last five years PoJazz has made almost 200 appearances in the North Country. These include monthly performances at Johnson State College, and shows at Champlain College, Castleton State College, Nectar's, Halvorson's, and Red Square. PoJazz has also appeared at SUNY-Plattsburgh, Vermont College, The Island Arts Festival, Montpelier's First Night, and The Black Door, among other venues.
PoJazz is sponsored by the Writing and Literature Department of Johnson State College. Our project is inspired by the college's commitment to interdisciplinary studies in the arts and humanities. PoJazz is fluid jazz theatre, and we are constantly changing, inviting new poets and musicians to join us in new shows.
Besides these venues, PoJazz perform at community centers and schools throughout the North Country. We're excited about bringing aspiring poets and musicians into our shows!
