Fine & Performing Arts
The fine & performing arts department offers students the opportunity to pursue one of two distinctive paths: visual arts or performing arts.
Fine arts students receive a great deal of personal attention while developing a critical and historical perspective for assessing their work. In addition, our M.F.A. students benefit from interaction with the prestigious Vermont Studio Center. We offer the following fine arts programs:
- B.A. Fine Arts
- B.F.A. Studio Arts
- M.F.A. Studio Arts
- Licensure in art
Performing arts students also enjoy a high level of personal attention, along with a strong emphasis on performing both in class and on stage. (Technical theater majors gain valuable hands-on experience through work at Dibden Center for the Arts and internships at a number of area venues.) Students may explore the following programs:
- B. A. Music
- B. A. Musical Theater
- B. A. Theater and Drama
- A. A. Technical Theater
- Teacher licensure in music education, theater arts and dance
A Unique Collaboration
A recent collaboration between a group of JSC students and a local senior living environment combined art with service learning in a unique way.
In spring 2006, Professor John Miller's Advanced Photography class partnered with the Craftsbury Community Care Center. Students visited several times a week, exchanging stories, joining seniors in art projects, and even sharing an evening of dancing and entertainment during Mardi Gras week.
Over the course of the semester, students fostered close bonds with the seniors, who appreciated the companionship and provided keen insight into the nature of aging. Our students also spent time photographing the residents and documenting various aspects of their lives.
The result of this collaboration was a traveling exhibition accompanied by reflective statements that students wrote as the project progressed. The exhibit opened at Craftsbury at the end of the semester, which delighted the residents and was a great source of pride for their families.
