Faculty Profile: Lisa Jablow

Lisa JablowNative New Yorker Lisa Jablow is a teacher, vocalist, conductor, and an actor who lives and breathes theater. She has performed on stages large and small, from the world-class Carnegie Hall to the quaint Hyde Park Opera House in small-town Vermont. On the faculty at Johnson State College for two decades, Lisa for a time held a concurrent position in the chorus with the New York City Opera and commuted twice per week between classes. The hectic pace proved unsustainable, but she says the experience continues to pay off for her and her students.

"There's nothing like the pressure of performing in a major venue to tell you when your technique is really there or not," she says. "And unless you've really felt that kind of pressure, that kind of need to fall back on a solid technique, you can't really teach it to people."

Locally, Lisa has appeared with numerous theater groups, including Lost Nation Theater, the Burlington Choral Society and Lyric Theatre. She has played the roles of Fruma Sarah in "Fiddler On The Roof" and as Domina in "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum" with the Lamoille County Players. Animals, both domestic and wild, are her second passion in life. Currently, she cares for four cats and three turtles, all rescuees. She also practices Bikram yoga and, she says, "I try to be regular about my Buddhist meditation."
