Professor of Writing & Literature, At JSC since 1977

Professor Andrea Perham is the recipient of this year’s Distinguished Faculty Award.  Andrea came to JSC in 1977 after earning her B.A. in American literature from Middlebury College and her M.A. in English from Seton Hall University.  Andrea helped create the Writing Proficiency Exam and participated in a national project examining the role of expository writing in academic courses.  In 1980, she was appointed director of developmental skills and began training tutors overseeing the Learning Resource Center and supervising student orientation and academic advising.  Three years later she became JSC’s dean of student affairs.

In 1987, Andrea completed her Ph.D. in English at McGill and joined JSC’s Writing and Literature faculty as an assistant professor.  She subsequently served two years as associate academic dean, co-chaired two NEASC reaccreditation steering committees, and chaired the Writing & Literature department for more than 15 years.  She helped design a two-semester writing course for underprepared students and has coordinated English instruction and tutoring for international and immigrant students.
