Excellence in Advising Award 2008

Tyrone Shaw

Tyrone Shaw

Assistant Professor of Writing & Literature ,
Advisor for Basement Medicine (student newspaper)

The award recognizes the confidence, guidance, knowledge, and assistance freely given to help students achieve their academic goals, and it acknowledges the personal sacrifice, dedication, commitment, selflessness, and willingness to bestow the support and understanding necessary for exemplary advising. This award goes to a faculty advisor nominated by students and department chairs for his or her exceptional commitment to academic advising.

Tyrone Shaw is this year's recipient. In his remarks as presenter of this award, Academic Dean Dan Regan said of the award and of the recipient:

"Faculty and staff have committed themselves to the     persistence and early success of JSC students.  We know that high quality advising plays a major role in advancing this goal.  We know, further, that good advising is complex — far more than helping someone pick a class schedule.

"Allow me to read from a nomination submitted by a freshman:

'Not only has [he] been a great educator here for my first year at Johnson, but he has befriended me. He always made sure to check up on me even if it wasn't during our scheduled advising meetings. He is always there to talk to me about future decisions involving both school and my personal life. He has made my freshman year at Johnson a comfortable one.  [He] has a way of making people feel comfortable with his great sense of humor and keen insight [into] the obstacles that many college students face.  [He] also has a great balance between being a friend and being a professional. It is clear that he takes his job very seriously and he works extremely hard to make sure his advising students are doing their best work. . . I couldn't ask for a better advisor!'"
