Faculty Profile: Hans Haverkamp

Dr. Hans Haverkamp

Hans Haverkamp has a Ph.D. in Kinesiology, with an emphasis in Exercise Physiology, from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Prior to beginning his professorship at Johnson State College, Hans completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Vermont’s College of Medicine, where he added to an already extensive publication record in the field of asthma research. Hans began at Johnson State College in 2007, and resides in Stowe, Vermont.

Hans greatly enjoys working with students in the classroom, where he aims to create an environment that instills an excitement and curiosity for learning among the students.

“In the Health Sciences, there is often a great deal of memorization of facts and details related to the human body; however, my main goal is to foster development of strong critical-thinking and problem-solving skills as they relate to the human body,” said Hans. Thus, students spend significant time in class addressing thought-provoking questions on novel scenarios related to course content. “It is the utilization and application of knowledge that is important, rather than an ability to simply regurgitate facts.”

When he is not in the classroom or in the Exercise Physiology Laboratory, Hans is an avid windsurfer and spends a great deal of time outdoors snowboarding, cycling, hiking, and cross country skiing. He also practices yoga regularly and enjoys reading all types of books.
