Tara MacCallum
Tara always knew she wanted to be a teacher, so when her mother and some of her high school teachers suggested Johnson State College, she decided to check it out. "I fell in love with the campus, and I sat in on some classes and I just loved them, too."
Her experience here so far has supported that initial reaction. "I really like the small classroom size, as well as knowing that I can talk and meet with professors whenever I need to. The faculty here really support the students." They also provide a lot of good feedback to students as they are immersed in the classroom setting early on, a hallmark of the JSC education program.
The professors here want you to succeed, she says, and so do your peers. "The other students in my major are like a support group."
Even outside of her major, Tara finds that students at JSC are really supportive. "Everyone is so willing to help and so accepting. Everyone can find a place here."
When she's not studying, Tara likes to be outside. In the winter, you can find her taking advantage of her season pass at Smugglers' Notch ski resort — "I love snowboarding," she says. In other seasons, she likes to hike, watch movies, and just hang out.
A member of the Dance Club and A Global Partnership: Students For Children's Rights, Tara was also a member of the Pizza Club her first year, a group that goes to various pizza restaurants and rates the pizza for the benefit of the campus community! "It was really fun and a great way to meet people," she iaughs.
