Rayshelle Mazur
Rayshelle Mazur has always enjoyed working with children — their natural sense of curiosity, their ability to learn so much — so, when it came time to choose a college and think about a major, education seemed like the right choice. But the fact that Johnson State College's education program gets education majors into the classroom early and often, to help the students really see if education is the right major for them, really helped Rayshelle decide.
She helped plan lessons, observed the teacher, discussed what she saw with her peers and professor, and was able to make an informed decision to stick with her instinct and pursue her teaching degree.
The early introduction into the classroom setting was just one of the features of JSC that attracted Rayshelle. "The small size of the school was really attractive," she says. The faculty know her by name, as do the other students in her major. "I really like how nice and open the professors are," she explains. "They let you come to them with questions, and you can really talk to them." The other students in her major are also a great help, offering each other support and insight into their classroom experiences.
In addition to her studies, Rayshelle participates in a number of campus activities, including the JSC Dance Club and A Global Partnership: Students For Children's Rights, a club committed to helping end the exploitation of children across the globe. She also enjoys listening to music, hanging out with friends and going to the movies.
After she graduates, Rayshelle hopes to go on to be a classroom teacher as well as get a graduate degree in education.
