Faculty Profile: Robert Di Giulio

Robert Di GiulioWhen asked about his educational background, Bob Di Giulio starts with memories of his childhood: reading with his parents and cherishing the travel stories and books his godmother (one of the first Italian-American women to serve as a New York City public school principal) shared with him. The excitement for learning his family inspired laid the foundation for Bob's passion for education and for making the classroom a place that nurtures creativity, positive energy and hope.

Bob, who came to JSC in 1992, is himself a lifelong student. Most recently, he completed a second doctorate--in socio-education--from the University of South Africa, a school he sought out not only because of his interest in working with two professors there and in studying other cultural models for teaching students in less-than-ideal conditions, but also because of his admiration for two of the school's alumni-Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. The experience, he says, "opened up a new way of thinking" for him, one that he brings to his work with students at JSC and to his ongoing research in education.
