The campus-based Child Development Center, directed by Bev Corrow, received four stars from the important Step Ahead Recognition Program. Parents who qualify, based on their incomes, for a child care subsidy receive a higher level of payment because of this award. Because the CDC serves a high percentage of children on subsidy, this recognition provides very concrete help to a number of families. CDC staff members are busy writing end-of-the-year reports on all the children at the Center and preparing a high quality summer program. An in-service training day was conducted on May 15. The morning training, led by the Lamoille Family Center's Stuart Senghas, focused on behavioral issues in children. Child Care staff members Cathy Mayo, Candy Lettieri, and Bev Corrow joined other JSC colleagues to make up several teams in the VT Corporate Challenge.

In November Ken Brighton presented a session at the National Middle School Conference in Houston. The session highlighted the concepts from his recently published book, Coming of Age: The Education and Development of Young Adolescents. About 70 middle-level educators attended the session. Ken’s book was also promoted and distributed to all administrators who attended the Principals Luncheon at the conference.

A special feature that aired on the weather segment of the WCAX Evening News recently highlighted Jean Haigh on a hike to Pulpit Rock. The segment cited Jean's skills as a teacher as well as her commitment to nature.
Richard Shanley organized and supervised the Regional 5/6 and 7/8 grades Spelling Bee Competition sponsored by the Vermont Principals Association at Northfield High School on November 3. Twelve schools from the Central Vermont Region competed for a spot at the State Spelling Bee Finals held at the State House on November 17.
EDP education student David Connelly received word that his Praxis II scores were among the highest 10 percent in the nation. He received a certificate of recognition for this achievement. Gina Ritscher-Winters supervised his Practicum II last spring.

Ken Brighton is the author of a textbook recently published by the National Middle School Association. The book, Coming of Age: The Education and Development of Young Adolescents, was written as a resource for middle school educators and parents of young adolescents. The book highlights the developmental traits of young adolescents, the contexts in which they must function, and health and wellness issues that affect this age group. In composing this work Ken drew from current research and his own experiences as a middle school teacher and parent of a young teen.
