THA-2030 Costume History and Design

Prerequisite: None.

An introduction to function, purpose and design of clothing and of theatrical costumes in each of the major periods of theatrical history from the era of Classical Greece to the 20th century. The course includes both study of historical styles of clothing and their adaptations for the stage, as well as some of the outstanding examples of costume created exclusively for the theater. The relationships of costuming and costume design to other production elements, the working vocabulary of the costume designer and costumer, and the emotional responses created by costuming are also examined.
