Student Internship Stories: Justin Halvorsen
The Highfields Institute is working to develop regenerative food systems through preservation and improvement of Vermont’s agricultural soils, watersheds, Tractor in Cornfield and agricultural economies through on-farm composting, organic materials recycling and soil health programs.
As an intern, Justin created a composting program for Mount Mansfield Union High School (MMU) in Jericho, VT. He collaborated with several organizations such as Chittenden Solid Waste District, and the Association of Vermont Recyclers (AVR), planning events such as a “Trash on the Lawn Day” and a Kitchen Waste Audit to educate students, faculty, staff, and the local community on composting.
Justin says, “This internship is the basis for me in determining the feasibility of creating my own nonprofit organization. It also acts as the foundation for my Senior Applied Research Project (SARP) through Sterling College in Craftsbury, VT where I will return to Mount Mansfield Union High School and develop a Garden Program incorporating the then year old composting program.”
