Faculty Profile: Reed Fisher
To pay for undergraduate and graduate school, Reed Fisher waited tables and bartended in Indiana and Washington, D.C. On a meandering, yearlong, cross-country trip, he had an epiphany: he would set aside his degrees in mathematics and economics and focus on what he loved: the hospitality industry. He obtained a Masters of Professional Studies in Hotel Administration from Cornell University, in addition to completing his doctoral course work.
"One thing I love about the business is that you meet all types of people including celebrities. If you are lucky, they come up to you and say, 'We had the best time.' It's instant gratification," he says. "That's the same way I feel about teaching." Professor Fisher draws on his vast restaurant experience to teach students in hospitality and business. He has served as a consultant, co-owned restaurants in New Mexico and managed foodservice operations in several states. "I bring a great perspective to the classroom," he says. "I can say, 'This is what the book says, but let me tell you what really happens in the business world.' "
Professor Fisher and his wife, a doctor, have three children in college. He enjoys playing golf, traveling, hiking, camping, and collecting wine.
