Internships
Christina Gilbert
Teachers Assistant, Mentor, Group Facilitator
Cambridge Elementary School
Christina offered support to the teacher in delivery of lesson plans and classroom management, providing one-on-one support to two students and shadowing/facilitating small groups and one on one.
Christina says, "This experience has been amazing and eye-opening. I am lucky to have found an internship that explores both career options that I am interested in (psychology and education). It has helped me discover career paths I want to pursue."
Faye Hackett
Teen Center Coordinator
Lamoille Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition, Tobacco Coalition), and Morrisville Teen Center Coordinator
Faye says about her internship: "Being out of the classroom and in the community has taught me respect, responsibility, and allowed me to apply my course/text learning to the real world situations that help today's teens be tomorrow's leaders. This internship has opened many doors to how I can become part of this world and strive to make it a better place for youth."
Meagan Robideaux, head coordinator of the Teen Center says, "Faye's contributions are great; she attends meetings and brings good ideas to the table, that keeps us on our toes and helps bring awareness to the community about today's youth and the struggles they may experience. Also, Faye raised our awareness on how to talk to today’s youth and connect with them on a new level of prevention."
April Hoonhout
Shelter Associate/Assistant Trainer
North Country Animal League
April was responsible for animal care and handling, applying training techniques to shelter and owned animals and communication with adopters and surrenderers. She says, "This is a fantastic learning experience in reciprocation - I received what I have given, which is unconditional love."
Blaine LaChance
Instructor/Observer/Researcher
Smugglers' Notch Resort
Blaine says, "My responsibility was to search for various 'sources/situations' which provoke fear in students. This is done by way of informal interview, observation, and research. I encountered several unexpected situations with fear as the underlying problem source. I learned a tremendous amount during this internship, not only pertaining to fear but people in general. I also gained a great respect for people in the industry who pride themselves on collecting data and drawing formal results."
He sums it up by saying this: "Internships can be really fun. Smugglers' Notch Resort is the perfect avenue to combine one's passion for the outdoors with their ambition for higher learning."
Katie Lowrie
Act 1 Generalist/Intern
Howard Mental Health - Act 1/The Bridge Substance Abuse Detox and Stabilization Facility
Responsible for daily needs of clients detoxing from their drug(s) of choice, performing client intake, assessing the treatment needs of the client, facilitating therapeutic group meetings, communicating with other mental health agencies, assisting the client to achieve treatment goals, and assisting the client in choosing further treatment possibilities.
"My experience with Act 1 has been a step in the right direction. When I started my internship I knew nothing of the medical approach involved in detoxing from drugs, let alone developing a treatment plan. Working in a stabilization and detoxification unit is the grit and grind of the recovery process. The scads of associated paper work are overwhelming but the real value of this internship has been the direct relationships I've developed with the clients."
Kristine Morris
Case Manager
Riverview Life Skills Center
Kristine was a service provider working with people with traumatic brain injuries, including case management, medication distribution, community re-entry, and life skills. "I've learned a great deal as a Case Manager. With this experience, I have had the opportunity to see another angle of care delivery for people with traumatic brain injuries. It was a sense of accomplishment when I helped support my client with a job through VocRehab."
Thomas O'Connor
Facilitator
Adaptive Sports Center in Crested Butte, Colorado
Thomas facilitated and led a multitude of activities from ropes courses to mountain biking to multi-day expeditions for youth and adults, with special needs, and their families. He says, "The best thing about this work is it is uplifting. I get paid back in smiles."
Ally Wise
Learning Together Intern
Lamoille Family Center
Ally worked assisting the students with their studies, helping them achieve their goals of attaining a GED, ABE or high school diploma. She participated in therapy groups and an educational group.
"This experience has been such a learning experience! I am working with a population that I haven't been exposed to in my past. This allows me to expand my understanding of the world around me and has piqued my interest in more advanced education."
Angela Tallman, Ally's site coordinator says,
"It has been great having Ally along for this semester with our girls. She is always enthusiastic and offers new ideas for what we can do in our down times. The girls also like her, which helps."
